This innovation makes it easier for authors, editors, and other team members to directly address others' comments during the editing process, thereby eliminating confusion and enhancing collaboration.
So in order to make changes to this default template, you need to open up the font options box. The easiest way to do this is with a keyboard shortcut. For Mac users, hit Command + D. For Windows users, hit Ctrl + D instead. Change the font to the one you’d like to use. Don’t hit “OK.” Instead, click the “Default” button.
Some sharing options were available in previous Word versions, but it's even easier in Word 2016 to share files. Sharing options are found on the File menu. Here is how you change your default to single spaced lines with no spacing before or after. • On the Ribbon click on the small rectangle in the PARAGRAPH box. • Change the Before and After spacing to zero. • Change Line Spacing to single. • Change At: to blank.
And simply repeat these steps to change your default font settings again if you want. Editing your default template file Another way to change your default font settings is to edit your Normal.dotm file.
On the “Font” dialog box, select the font you want to set as the default in the “Font” list box and click the “Set As Default” button. A dialog box displays asking if you want to set the default font for the current document only or for all documents based on the Normal template. Select the “All documents based on the Normal.dotm template” radio button. NOTE: The new default font is saved only to the template currently in use.

I confess ignorance on this. Suzanne Barnhill gave some guidance in this forum: 'The font for many styles in Word (unless you change it to a specific font) is defined as being either the Body font or the Heading font. This is determined by the theme. If, instead of assigning a specific font to a style, you choose Body or Heading, then if you apply a different theme that uses different Body and Heading fonts, your styles will change automatically.
Once there, choose your preferred font and size. Make sure you select “New documents based on this template” before you hit okay and you’re all set (on a Mac, it’s “Add to template”).
